imagesSpecial Award for Most Nurturing Environment
imagesWinner

The winner of this year’s Special Award for Most Nurturing Environment goes to Salesians of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School (SDBNSMSS). What sets it apart from other nominated schools is its approach to developing a “Well-being”, “Community” and “Future” school to drive positive changes at school and in the wider community of Hong Kong.

To achieve this, the school has participated in Project Zero, which is a 3-year educational research project led by Harvard University. Not only has the school built STEAM facilities such as iLab, EcoLab for students to put knowledge into action, it has also successfully sparked students’ curiosity and cultivated their critical thinking skill, by implementing the “Innovation in Action” and “See, Think, Wonder” methodologies.

A remarkable initiative of making positive change in the community is the invention of a “Smart Medicine Recognition Machine” built by a group of Form three students leveraging programming and object recognition lenses.

This invention was brought to life as the group of students was made aware of the elderly’s struggle to identify pills due to ageing and deteriorating vision. The invention was awarded the “My Favourite STEM invention” in the SMART Community Hackathon.

The school has gone an extra mile to give back to the society and create positive impacts on a community level. It collaborated with the Education University of Hong Kong to conduct four Community Engagement Projects at Kwong Pan Tien Village in Tsuen Wan. The objective of the projects was to bring a global perspective of sustainable development to the Village so as to preserve its rich and interesting history. The projects consisted of mural painting, home visits, Jackfruit Festival and life-wide learning experiences spanning over the academic year 2021 to 2023. All of the students and school staff were involved in the projects and contributed to the conservation of the environment and the preservation of the unique village culture.

It is the nurturing environment, unconventional teaching methodologies, state-of-the-art STEAM facilities and supportive teachers at SDBNSMSS that enabled the students to drive positive changes on a community level.
